Syracuse Football Sends Cal to the Showers in 33-25 Win

In its first trip to Bear territory since the late ’60s, Syracuse Football got back to its winning ways against Cal, 33-25. No one needed that more than Orange Head Coach Fran Brown, who said after the Boston College loss that only “winners get washed.”
After the win, Brown leaned into the bit, saying he “smelled like 100 racks.” His postgame press conference ended with him blaring a speaker playing the song “100 Grand” by Lil Durk. Brown even sang the verse “Smellin’ good with this Bond No. 9” before leaving the room.
“(Brown) was giving team balls out to a few of the guys who played well, and then one of the guys in the back said, ‘Coach Fran, we’ve got something for you!'” said quarterback Kyle McCord of the locker room following the win. “It was an Old Spice bottle.”
“I don’t even think it was planned by anybody,” added tight end Oronde Gadsden. “Yasin (Willis) just said ‘we got something for you, Coach’ and everyone got quiet. He just pulled out a bottle of soap. Winners get washed, you know?”
Syracuse’s players could joke around post-game because they finally got off to a strong start. After not scoring in the first quarter over its last three games, SU led 27-7 at the break. But it wasn’t all offense. The orange had two takeaways: one from regular Marlowe Wax and the other from true freshman cornerback Davien Kerr.
“Coach (Brown) was walking me through everything throughout the whole game,” said Kerr of his first career interception. “I’ve played receiver, so when (Cal’s Nyziah Hunter) gave me a speed release, I’m either thinking there’s a hitch or a fade coming. The sideline said ‘ball’ and I went up, high-pointed the ball.”
“I was super proud of Davien,” said linebacker Marlowe Wax. “He came in came in late summer and has been grinding with us all year. We all knew it was something in him that he had, some talent. Coach (Brown)really been the one on him, trying to pull the potential out.”
“What do they call him, Wally Pip?” said Brown of Kerr. “Davien Kerr came in and all of a sudden, he’s going to be a superstar.”
Kerr and his defense are back in action on Saturday, defending the Dome against UConn, who’s already bowl eligible. Syracuse improved to 7-3, ensuring just its third winning season in the last decade.
