It was a day full of celebration, career-highs and broken records as Syracuse took down the UConn Huskies 31-24 on Senior Day.
Quarterback Kyle McCord put up a career-high 470 passing yards and two touchdowns, but in the process, he also broke the program’s single-season record for passing yards. The quarterback said he has absolutely no regrets about coming to Syracuse.
“It was the best decision I’ve ever made in my life,” McCord said. “I think the people that I’ve met here and the relationships I’ve created will last a lifetime that will go a lot further than wins, losses and records and all that. On top of that, I think I grew as a player and person here more than I could’ve imagined.
McCord said it himself. He could not break this record by himself and showed love to his receiver corps. Seniors Oronde Gadsden II and Jackson Meeks both went over 100 yards in the win against the Huskies.
But, the real story was sophomore wide receiver Darrell Gill Jr., putting up nine receptions for 177 yards. Both were career-highs. Head coach Fran Brown said he was extremely impressed with what he saw today.
“He understands the offense so whatever Coach Nixon calls, he’s able to go to any position,” said Coach Brown. “He can play X, he can play slot, and he can also play Z so that helps him a lot. He’s just a tough kid.”
Coach Brown has acknowledged the recent struggles in the month of November for Syracuse football. In his first season at the helm, the Orange sit at 3-1 looking to make it 4-1 as #11 Miami comes to the Dome for the regular season finale.
The Hurricanes also had a record-breaker today. Quarterback Cam Ward set the single-season passing yards record for the U. It will be a fun one when the nation’s top 2 passing leaders face-off.
Kick-off is at 3:30 P.M. on Saturday, November 30th.
