Syracuse Can’t Score Down the Stretch in 100th Meeting With Georgetown

New day, old rivalry, same results. Syracuse in its 100th ever matchup with Georgetown lost on Saturday in the Dome 75-71. The Orange had a two-point lead with just over four minutes to go 69-67. But then in an Ode to Jim Boeheim and his 2-3 zone defense, Hoyas Head Coach Ed Cooley had one final trick up his sleeve.

COOLEY: “You know changing defenses was something that we definitely wanted to do. Ironically, two Zone here at the cuse, interesting. Coach Boeheim is either clapping or he’s cussing me out.”

AUTRY: “We got the ball and then J missed a couple, Eddie had one that rimmed in and out, then one went right through his hands on a duck in play. I think Choppa had a corner three, you know we just didn’t score when we needed to score though. We got hesitant late with a couple of couple of shots. I thought Elijah had one or two that he could have took that he didn’t, but you know that’s you know you can pick everything apart now you know once  the game’s over with.”

DAVIS: “In the second half I think they did a good a better job of you know keeping out the middle and being more aggressive on the ball, and got it in the middle and really just on us you know just knowing the reads of the zone and making shots out of it. It hurts bad I mean if you go to Texas go to Texas Tech go to Notre Dame any game we’ve  been in we’ve lost we probably could have and should have won.”

LAMPKIN: “Helping my teammates more just all on top of our Scouts and just trying to figure out what we need to do to get the dub and I feel like we just need to play for 40 minutes and not like 32 35.”

In a game where the Orange lost by just four points, they missed eight free throws. They also shot just 25% from beyond the arc. Autry praised his point guard Jaquan Carlos, his third straight good game, but Carlos also notably passed up on a wide open three-pointer from the top of the key with under two minutes to go. Carlos and the rest of the Cuse have a week to get ready for a very good Maryland team. That one’s in Barclays. Brooklyn, New York, the same place where Syracuse lost against Texas and Texas Tech just over 3 weeks ago. The Orange are in danger of dropping below .500 and it’s still just December.
