Power Plays, All Day for Syracuse Ice Hockey’s 5-2 win over Lindenwood.
Penalties were the name of the game for SU in its offensive showcase here tonight. In Syracuse Ice Hockey’s (9-20. 7-8 in AHA) 5-2 win over Lindenwood (3-22-2, 2-12-1 in AHA), the Orange earned five power play opportunities, two of which came up fruitful. Syracuse head coach Brittany Smith says that her squad was well-prepped for woman-up situations.
“Yeah, I think that the penalty kill especially was something we really challenged them with. If we could dominate that, we felt pretty good about our game. We did some pre-scouting and I thought that they really did a good job of just buying into kind of the simple plays that we needed to eliminate some of their offense. So happy with that and then our power play, you know, we’ve made a couple adjustments over the last couple weeks and they hadn’t been seeing much success. So for them to start to see that I think is huge.”
One of those power play goals came from sophomore Jackson Kinsler. The forward finished today with four points and two goals, both career-highs. Coach Smith says that a day like today was a long time in the making for Kinsler.
“Yeah, I think she’s someone who, you know, her game was not struggling necessarily, but hadn’t been finding the points that I think that she expects from herself. So to see her with four tonight, I think just shows her ability to stick with it and to continue to play her game and battle through some of those tough bounces I think she was getting. So nice to see her find the back of the net a couple times and obviously with her being on our top power play, she gets a lot of time and it’s great to see her reward in front with that little tip in.”
After a dominant start to the weekend series, Syracuse looks ahead to game two tomorrow, which also happens to be senior day. The final regular season home game gets going at 1 p.m between the Orange and the Lions. Reporting from Tennity Ice Pavilion, Ben Chadwick, Citrus TV.
