History is made in Syracuse Ice Hockey’s loss to No. 9 Penn State

It was a night that Syracuse ice hockey (7-18, 5-6 in AHA) fans will never forget here in the Tennity Ice Pavilion, despite the one nothing loss to number nine Penn State (20-4-1, 11-0 in AHA) in overtime, Syracuse goalie Allie Kelley set the all time NCAA career saves the record with 4,176.

Now, despite the fans packing the stands to see this historic achievement. Kelley says her focus was always on the game.

“It was nice to see all the support from the fans, and I was kind of confused when everybody rushed the ice. I thought maybe it was TV time out or something. It was an unfortunate way to get that saves number, but I think we fought hard and we’ll come back tomorrow looking for the win.”

After going on the hunt in the transfer portal, looking for her next goalkeeper. Syracuse head coach Britni Smith says that once she saw Kelley, she knew she was the perfect fit.

“She checked boxes on everything past coaches had nothing but great things to say about her. You know, really talking about how she could really help change the program, and after watching video, we thought there was nothing missing in our eyes. So we were excited that pretty much after one phone call, we had gotten that opportunity. So obviously a good decision on our part and hopefully she feels the same.”

The celebrations for Allie Kelly’s accomplishment will last a lifetime, but the next thing on Syracuse ice hockey’s agenda is a win in the calendar year. Their next chance will be tomorrow, in game two of their doubleheader against number nine Penn State at 3pm. Reporting from the Tennity Ice Pavilion. Ben Chadwick, Citrus TV.
