Wolf Pack Unleash Barrage of Shots in 3-2 Overtime Win Over Orange

RALEIGH, N.C.- Defense has certainly not been the strong suit for the Orange this year, and that certainly didn’t change tonight. Syracuse (3-10-2, 1-6-1 Atlantic Coast) may have taken NC State (7-5-4, 2-2-4 Atlantic Coast) to overtime tonight, but the Orange lost 3-2.
And that final score certainly didn’t do justice to the Wolf Pack’s dominance. NC State outshot Syracuse 27-8 while taking eight corners.
The Orange did, however, get the scoring underway first, as the captain, Kailee Coonan, buried her first goal of the campaign in the 11th minute off a beautiful feed by Taylor Bennett.
But the Wolf Pack answered off one of their corners, as Lulu Guttenberger sent one into the box, which Kristina Schuster buried in the 33rd minute.
Then, with four minutes before halftime, Tziarra King finessed a controversial goal past Lysianne Proulx to give the Wolf Pack their first lead of the match at 2-1.
In the second half, though, Marisa Fischetti took a rebound off the NC State keeper and put away the equalizer.
But in the overtime period, Kia Rankin buried the game-winner to the back right for NC State.
Syracuse’s road struggles continue as the Orange remain winless away from the SU Soccer Stadium this season. While it was the first match the Orange scored multiple goals on the road in, the 27 shots allowed matches their season-high, as the defensive woes continue, particularly on the road.
Bad news for the Orange is their road trip isn’t over yet, and it only gets harder on Sunday when Syracuse faces No. 9 Duke (7-1-6, 2-0-5 Atlantic Coast) in Durham. Kickoff is set for one o’clock.
