Syracuses Dismantles Marshall 6-1 in Regular Season Finale
Yaw Bonsu, SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse Tennis took care of business in its season finale on Sunday, defeating Marshall handily 6-1.
It was a must-win situation for the Orange as they came into the dual looking to snap a two-match losing streak. SU did just that thanks to a dominating performance by the whole team.
Starting off with doubles play, Sofya Trescheva and Polina Kozyreva were beat 6-4 by Marshall’s Liz Stefancic and Jutte Vanhansewyck.
The Orange duo has played a team-high 16 matches together the past two seasons, with its record now being 5-12. However, with the pressure n in the No. 2 and No.3 doubles, Syracuse delivered.
In the No. 2 doubles, Natalie Novotna and Viktoriya continued to show why they are ranked inside the top-40 duos in the country. The pair defeated MU’s Anna Smith and Daniela Dankanych. Kanapatskaya and Novotna broke a five-match losing streak.
To round off doubles play, Miranda Ramirez and Guzal Yusupova also won their double match 6-4 with a win over Madi Ballow and Madison Riley.
In singles play, #14 Viktoriya Kanapatskaya led the way beating Anna Smith 6-2, 6-0. Kanapatsaya as a freshman, emerged as SU’s best player this regular season and showed why by improving to 10-5 across No. 1 and No.2 singles play.
To follow that up, Natalie Novotna, who has had her fair share of struggles this season took down Madi ballow 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 3 singles to improve her regular-season record to 7-8 in singles play.
Zeynep Erman clinched the dual for Syracuse after defeating Jutte Vanhansewyck 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 5 singles match. Erman improves to 11-5 across both this and last season. The rest of the results for dual were as follows:
No. 4 – Liz Stefanic (MU) def. Miranda Ramirez (SU), 6-3, 6-3
No. 6 – Polina Kozyreva (SU) def. Madison Riley (MU), 6-2, 6-1
No. 2 – Guzal Yusupova (SU) def. Daniela Dankanych, 6-2, 5-7, (10-3)
Next up for Syracuse is the ACC Tournament.
