Syracuse Ice Hockey is Swept Once Again

Syracuse Ice Hockey falls 5-2 at 12th ranked Penn State and gets swept in the two game series. This loss marks SU’s ninth straight defeat which ties its longest losing streak since 2019.
The Orange were simply outplayed in this game. While it was tied at one for a long period of time, the Nittany Lions were constantly applying pressure. They held the puck for a large majority of the game. PSU outshot SU 37-18 in the game. Syracuse had just two more shots than last night’s contest. Penn State had the exact same number of shots as Thursday night. That shot count Friday night forced SU net minder Allie Kelley to make 32 saves, her third consecutive game with 30+ stops.
The largest point of emphasis in this series though, was penalties. There were a total of 21 penalties in this two-game series. There were also two major penalties dished out by the referees, including a game misconduct in game one by freshman Carly Sardine. That ejected her from the rest of that game until she made her return in today’s game.
Syracuse took eight trips to the penalty box. Penn State had 13 penalties committed. That combined for 52 total penalty minutes. Henceforth, nearly an hour between the two contests was spent in the penalty box. However, both teams strut their stuff on the penalty kill. Only three combined goals were scored on the advantage. Two came from the Nittany Lions, and one came from the Orange. The trio of power-play goals all came from today’s game. SU was 1-5 and PSU was 2-7.
Syracuse enters a much-needed bye week after this series. It does not play again until another two game in-conference series against Rochester Institute of Technology. Those games are Friday, November 15th, and Saturday November 16th. Start time on Friday is 6 p.m.
