Syracuse Glides Past Siena 3-0 For First Win of Season

After Thursday’s disappointing 1-0 loss to Delaware, Syracuse Women’s soccer was in need of a morale boost before returning home. The Orange got just that in the form of a dominant 3-0 win over Siena.
Every level of SU’s squad stepped up especially the midfield. The ‘Cuse dominated possession as a result and it led to a calmer, much more in-control offensive attack than in game one. The Orange defended the Saints at a high level in Syracuse’s attacking third leading to a multitude of opportunities.
The SU offense got off to a slow start originally, but after increased pressure and constantly chipping away, Alyssa Abramson slotted home the Cuse’s first goal of the season and the first of her collegiate career.
Just four minutes later Erin Flurey would blaze through defenders on a counterattack and fire into the upper left corner from far beyond the 18-yard box. The Orange had been held scoreless for 125 minutes and all of a sudden they had a commanding two-goal lead within the span of five minutes.
Shea Vanderbosch also had herself a solid afternoon in net. Although Vanderbosch only got credit for four saves, her positioning in net slowed down multiple Siena break-aways. The Saints did well on counterattacks getting multiple chances in behind the SU backline, but the sophomore keeper was up to the task each time.
The 3-0 win was topped off by a Hannah Pilley finish in the box for the first goal of her senior season. The Orange completed the trifecta of one goal in the box, one goal from outside the box, and a goal from a set piece. Erin Flurey picked up a team-leading second point with her assist to Pilley in the 74th minute.
SU improves to 1-1 on the season with its toughest task yet just around the corner. The Orange will face the Auburn Tigers on Thursday, August 24th for this year’s SU Soccer Stadium home opener. Both sides have met just once back in 2019 with Auburn taking the game 2-0. Kickoff between the ‘Cuse and War Eagle is slated for 3:00 p.m.
