There could not have been a more electrifying start to the campaign for Syracuse field hockey. SU dominated Lock Haven 9-0 this afternoon in the season opener. Even the word domination feels like an understatement. Syracuse did not allow a shot on goal, and had eight different scorers in the match.

The Orange got off to a hot start, with Bo van Kempen netting the first goal of the season for Syracuse on a penalty corner from Annabelle Vossenar and Willemijn Boogert at the 7:46 mark in the first quarter. That goal from van Kempen was the only tally in the first frame. The second quarter though was a completely different story.

Syracuse found the back of the cage four times, starting with a penalty stroke from van Kempen to give herself a brace in the contest just two and a half minutes into the second. After that, three different Orange players blew the game wide open. About six and half minutes into the second, Olivia Bell slotted one home off a one-time pass from the end-line by Nina van Asselen. Just four minutes later, Hattie Madden added another goal on a breakaway opportunity off a through pass from Boogert. Just a couple minutes after Madden’s goal, Sarah Smalley collected a rebound and got her first goal of the campaign. All of those goals gave Syracuse a 5-0 lead at the half.

The Orange didn’t stop there though, Pati Strunk got a deep pass from Lana Hamilton to make it 6-0 Syracuse. Just two minutes later, rookie Taja Gans netted her first goal as a member of the Orange, pushing the SU total to 7.

It was more of the same in the fourth quarter, with Rowan Vivian deflecting one in on a shot from Madden. Aiden Drabick would cap off the scoring, slotting one home off a pass from Vivian on the counterattack.

The win marks the first time in franchise history that Syracuse has beaten Lock Haven away from home. The Orange will look to keep the momentum rolling against #16 Penn State on Sunday.
