MOON TOWNSHIP, P.A. – Whistles blew left and right in Syracuse Ice Hockey’s (11-20, 9-8 in AHA) over Robert Morris (8-20-3, 2-13-2 in AHA). In total, 13 penalties were called for 48 combined power play minutes. The Orange were called on seven while the Colonials were responsible for the other six. Not only is that the most penalties called against SU this season, but it’s also the most called against a ‘Cuse opponent on the year. If you couldn’t tell by looking at the final score, Syracuse performed much better in power-play situations.

SU scored on two of its six woman-up advantages while RMU couldn’t capitalize on any of its seven. Forwards Bryn Saarela and Nea Tervonen knocked in the two power-play goals. Grad students Tatum White and Charli Kettyle tallied the other two net rattlers. However, the talking point happened towards the end of the first period.

After a Colonials forward collided with her, star Syracuse goalie Allie Kelley was called for a major contact to the head penalty after her stick hit the head of the RMU player. Kelley was ejected from the game and became the first ‘Cuse player to be thrown out of a game this season. Filling her shoes for two periods was sophomore Bella Gould who showed out.

Gould was perfect in front of the net. She made 17 saves and didn’t allow a single goal for her entire 40-minute stint.

With the win, Syracuse has already clinched the season series. Ironically, this is the third straight 4-1 win for SMU over RMU.

Game #2 gets going tomorrow at 3 p.m. in the Clearview Arena over in Moon Township.
