A Second Period Collapse Dampers Syracuse Ice Hockey’s New Years Aspirations

DULUTH, M.N. – New year, same results. Syracuse Women’s Ice Hockey (7-13) dropped its first game of the new year 6-2 at No. 4 Minnesota Duluth (12-5-2). SU is now 0-8 against ranked opponents this season. But the final score doesn’t tell the full story of how the game played out.
SU trailed 2-1 with just 30 seconds left in the second. Orange defender Charli Kettyle scored the initial goal and her sixth of the season two minutes into the second period. But then, things started to spiral.
In just 28 seconds, the Bulldogs scored not one, but TWO goals to turn a manageable one-goal lead into a monstrous three-goal advantage heading into the third. One of which came with triple 0s on the clock and had to be reviewed and confirmed by officials. And despite a quick score by forward Bryn Saarela to start the third, SU just didn’t seem to have the same confidence that they did through most of the first two periods. UMD tacked on two more goals to put the final nail in the coffin. Bulldogs forward Olivia Wallin led the team with two goals. Grad student Clara Van Wieren’s one goal and two assists resulted in a team-high three points.
Game two of the season series is tomorrow at 4:00 in the Amsoil Arena. After losing its first-ever matchup against Minnesota Duluth, Syracuse looks to get both its first win against UMD as well as its first victory of 2025.
