The Dome Hosts the Annual Winter Carnival

SYRACUSE, NY – The Orange Winter Wonderland Carnival took place in the Carrier Dome yesterday. Tradition’s Commission President Cassie Grossman says that this year’s Orange Carnival Week has a new look to it.
“We definitely knew that we wanted to do something big because we didn’t get to have that 150-year celebration last year, so we kind of went above and beyond,” Grossman says.
And they did. The Carnival surrounded the turf used for football and lacrosse games and took advantage of the stadium’s new big screens. For five hours, students and faculty stopped thinking about the pandemic and focused on having a good time.
“I think that having these safe in-person events with distancing and sanitizing still gives us a chance to utilize these on-campus spaces and can get kids involved,” Grossman says.
Besides creating a fun evening for SU, Grossman and her team formed a gameplan in protecting carnival-goers and staff from the pandemic. It was their number one priority.
“Obviously, given the COVID guidelines, we’ve had to work through all of that to make sure that all of our events are safe which is one, if not, the most important thing to us this year,” Grossman says.
Grossman says her night was made when she saw students walk through Gate A at 5 PM. She believes that she made a positive impact in the community.
“It’s been a pretty tough year for a lot of people and getting this chance to have a good time and kind of bring back those traditions that we usually do have on-campus is I think a bright light for some people and is something that they look forward to,” Grossman says.
