SYRACUSE, N.Y (CITRUSTV NEWS) – Over the past couple of weeks the norovirus has been rapidly spreading around Syracuse University’s campus.

Norovirus spreads through direct contact with someone such as, sharing food, drinks and utensils. As well as touching contaminated objects and surfaces.

There have been reported cases in five of the freshman dorms: Day Hall, Flint Hall, Brewster Hall, Boland Hall, and Brockway Hall.

“My roommate is in a sorority and she said with rush these past weekends it has been spreading a lot, which is crazy” said Keira Zabreskie.

Norovirus causes severe dehydration, which could lead individuals to be hospitalized.

“Hospitals are buckling down with the uptick in Norovirus,” said Upstate Hospital worker Lisa Przywara.

Students have been taking measures to prevent themselves from catching this virus. They have been seen wearing masks and gloves in hopes of protecting themselves.

“Norovirus specifically spreads through fecal matter, so after I go to the bathroom I make sure I wash my hands extra well,” said SU Public health major Magdaly Severa.

After many complaints the dorm staff has been cleaning the bathrooms multiple times a day, in hopes of reducing the spread of the virus. They have held dorm meetings to talk about the importance of cleanliness, so more people do not get sick.

Students are encouraged to monitor their health and seek medical attention if needed.
