SYRACUSE, NY – The multipurpose room at All Saints Church was filled with community last weekend as it hosted an Intergenerational Clothing Exchange. The event was run by the Philanthropic Educational Organization, also known as PEO. Attendees were able to clear out their closets to give back to the Syracuse community.

The exchange was attended by community members of all ages, from SU students to older members of the church and PEO chapter. The younger people were able to find unique vintage pieces in good quality that are harder to find in regular stores.

“I really like old clothing, and clothes with a story,” said Oliver Sun, an SU student. “I really think there’s a benefit to shopping secondhand and reducing waste in whatever ways you can.”

The exchange, as well as providing a way for PEO members to clear out their closets, supports women’s education. The nationwide organization funds scholarships and grants for women to obtain degrees, especially graduate work.

The AP Chapter of PEO at All Saints Church is committed to giving back to the community in the surrounding areas. This includes donating to homeless shelters and support groups for women and their children.

Member Marilouise Mattson said the chapter took this opportunity to help the immigrant community in Syracuse.

“What’s left tonight will be opened up to the immigrant population that attends this church,” said Mattson. “They can come in and choose clothing for themselves, their husbands, their children, whoever.”

Mattson believes that despite our differences, it is important to come together to care for those in need around us.

PEO will be hosting more events at All Saints Church to benefit women’s education, such as a Bingo Night in March.
