Syracuse Women’s Soccer Finds 3 Points, Defeats Miami 1-0

CORAL GABLES, Fl. – The legendary US Hockey head coach Herb Brooks once said, “Great moments come from great opportunity.” Syracuse Women’s Soccer (1-6, 1-6 Atlantic Coast Conference) had that tonight–and took advantage of it, as they earned win number one against Miami (0-7, 0-6 Atlantic Coast Conference), 1-0.
From the first whistle, the Syracuse offense was the most aggressive they have been all season. The ‘Cuse put up nine shots, with four on goal. Both numbers are good enough for season highs.
The lone goal came off the head of the junior defender Jenna Tivnan in the 33rd minute. The goal was the Easton, Mass. native’s first in her college career. She put up a total of three more headers throughout the match, with two of them coming off corner kicks.
The second half showed the Syracuse defense bending but never breaking. Miami came out more aggressive in the second half, putting up three shots on goal. The closest opportunity for the U came from forward Tia Dupont. In the 75th minute, the senior made a great run into the left side of the box. But, the aggressive play from Syracuse defender Alina Miagkova kept the game at 1-0.
From there, it only got worse for Miami. Four minutes later, Miami defender Selena Fortich was booked with a yellow card for shoving Kate Hostage to the ground well off the ball. Later, the Syracuse defense easily cleared a late corner kick with two minutes left.
Moreover, the Syracuse defense held their ground. The Orange gave up a total of ten shots, with only three of them on goal. Ultimately, Lysianne Proulx did not have as big of a burden tonight as she has had all season.
Nicky Adams and company move to 1-6-0 in their Atlantic Coast Conference schedule, snapping a ten-game losing streak. That skid began with none other than a 1-2 loss to Miami on October 13, 2020.
The Orange will look to finish the shortened regular season on a high note on Senior Day. Syracuse takes on No. 10 Virginia on Sunday. Kickoff is set for noon.
