SYRACUSE, N.Y.– Syracuse (3-12, 0-7 Atlantic Coast) entered Saturday’s contest with Notre Dame (7-8, 3-4) looking to snap its nine-game losing streak and send seniors Drina Domic and Jordan Harris out on a high note. Unfortunately for the Orange, those seniors left SU Soccer Stadium in defeat as Syracuse fell 5-1 to extend its losing streak to 10 games.
Unlike many of its other matchups, Syracuse kept it close for most of the match. Notre Dame opened with a goal from sophomore forward Eva Hurm in the fourth minute, then another goal from fifth year senior Karin Muya in the 44th minute especially caught coach Phil Wheddon’s eye.
“Number seven had a beautiful goal,” Wheddon said. “She was able to get around Jordan [Harris] on a great move and bury it to give them a 2-0 lead.”
Syracuse would respond late in the second half, however. Junior midfielder Georgia Allen scored off a rebound from sophomore midfielder/forward Kate Hostage to cut the Notre Dame lead to just one in the 72nd minute.
But that would be as close as SU would come. Notre Dame would subsequently seal the game as the Fighting Irish poured on three goals in the final 18 minutes and leave with a dominant 5-1 victory.
Notre Dame dominated possession throughout the match, something that SU has struggled with all season.
“We’ve got to keep possession,” Wheddon said. “We struggle advancing the ball past midfield which leads to far fewer chances for us and more chances for the opposition.”
Notre Dame posted 18 shots, with 11 being on net, outpacing the Orange’s numbers of 10 and five respectively to spoil Senior Night.
Syracuse now has nearly a week off before it travels to Charlottesville on Thursday to take on No. 6 Virginia. That match is scheduled to kick at 7 p.m. Following the match against Virginia, Syracuse travels to Winston-Salem to take on Wake Forest on Sunday before finishing the season off at home against Clemson the following Thursday.
