Women’s Soccer Dominates in 3-0 Win Over Cornell

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The SU Women’s Soccer team advanced to 3-1-1 on the season taking down Cornell 3-0 in dominating fashion, outshooting the Big Red 16-2.

Thursday night marked the beginning of a seven game home stand at the SU Soccer Stadium and the 11th matchup in program history against Cornell.

The Orange entered the contest unbeaten all time versus the Big Red and quickly proved they planned on keeping things that way. SU’s Kate Hostage drew a penalty in the box setting up a golden opportunity for Taylor Bennett in the 23rd minute. The sophomore defender took advantage burying her shot giving Syracuse a 1-0 lead.

Head Coach Phil Weddon and his squad dominated the entire first half and extended the Orange lead to 2-0 when freshman forward Kate Donovan scored her first career collegiate goal. She received a pass from Opal Curless and quickly turned around, burying her shot just inside the left post.

Donovan, who did not even start the game, capitalized again in the 54th minute off a corner kick. The service was volleyed masterfully by Carolin Bader right to her head and into the net, past the reach of Cornell goaltender Meghan Kennedy, giving SU a 3-0 lead.

Syracuse continued to control the pace for the rest of the game, as both sides cleared their benches. Coach Weddon utilized every active player in the win, allowing starters to rest and bench players to see game action.

The Orange is back in action next Sunday hosting Fairfield with kickoff set for 1p.m.
