Six-Seed Syracuse Women’s Lacrosse Doesn’t Last Long in ACC Championship

Charlotte, NC — Syracuse traveled down to Charlotte as the six seed for the ACC Championship, but its hopes of making a deep run were quickly dashed in a 15-10 loss to third-seeded Stanford.
The Cardinal looked like the better team from the start, jumping out to a 4-1 lead in the first quarter. But the Orange came storming back. SU went on an impressive 7-0 run to end the first period and carry into the second frame. Both Joely Caramelli and Alexa Vogelman tacked on two goals during that stretch, and Syracuse found itself up 8-4.
But to say Stanford had a response might be an understatement. The Cardinal unleashed six straight goals to retake the lead and never looked back en route to their victory.
“I thought we had a good first half, a great end to the first quarter and start to the second quarter… and then we came out of halftime and just didn’t execute,” said head coach Kayla Treanor. “We just didn’t execute.”
The Orange managed just seven shots on goal in the second half, and it took until the six-minute mark of the fourth quarter for SU to register a single shot.
There is at least one positive to take away from a rough night for SU. ’Cuse attacker Emma Ward became Syracuse’s all-time leader in assists after recording her 165th in the loss.
“That’s amazing, I’m so happy for her,” said Treanor. “What an unbelievable accomplishment. She’s one of the best passers I’ve ever seen, and she deserves to be at that number one spot.”
Despite making history, it wasn’t a big night for Ward otherwise. The Second Team All-American tallied just one point — this after being held scoreless in SU’s regular season finale against Boston College.
Speaking of Boston College, that’s who Stanford will face on Friday in the semifinal round of the ACC Championship. As for Syracuse, it now has to wait and see if an NCAA Tournament bid is in its future. With this defeat, a spot is far from guaranteed. Selection Sunday is on May 4th at 9:00 PM. The Orange are hoping for an at-large bid.
