SYRACUSE, NY — At the start of overtime, things looked bleak for No. 10 Syracuse women’s lacrosse against No. 6 Stanford. The Orange had coughed up a three-goal third quarter lead and stared down the program’s longest-ever losing streak.
But, the Orange came out with a 14-13 double overtime win, thanks to the game-winner from freshman Mileena Cotter. For the ’Cuse, it came down to one word: battle.
“A lot of teams in the stretch we were just in — we had a couple of losses,” said SU head coach Kayla Treanor postgame. “I think in a tight game, a lot of teams would fold or not rise to the challenge and this team did quite the opposite and battled and I’m really proud of them.”
“In games like this, players have to make plays, and they really did.”
“It’s definitely an exciting moment,” Cotter said of her GWG. “It’s a privilege to be in a high-pressure situation like that so I think, for sure, that these past couple of games we took really personally and it’s just really nice to put it away.
Although Cotter and the SU attack finished the job, it was SU’s defense that kept it in the game down the stretch.
“That’s really hard to do,” Treanor said. “To make that many consecutive stops in overtime is really difficult, and they did it.”
“I thought Coco [Vandiver] made a huge play for us when she picked off that pass [in overtime]. And also [Daniella Guyette] to get us to overtime. She had a huge save with a second left on the clock that sent us to overtime. That’s hard to do, but they rose to the challenge and they were great.”
Syracuse is right back at it Monday, against No. 8 Johns Hopkins in the Dome. Opening draw is set for 4 p.m. Follow @KleinJake_ on X for live updates.
