No. 5 Syracuse Women’s Lacrosse falls 9-8 to No. 12 Clemson, SU continues to battle for an ACC win

The calendar has officially flipped to March, a month often associated with luck. But unfortunately for No. 5 Syracuse women’s lacrosse, the Orange didn’t have much on their side. SU fell to No. 12 Clemson 9-8 for its third straight loss. Syracuse Head Coach Kayla Treanor attributes the defeat partly to a sloppy first quarter.

“We had a bunch of turnovers in transition, and that’s unlike us. We cannot do that. We can’t start the game with as many turnovers as we do. Some of them came from perimeter passing, just little things, and it’s self-inflicted wounds. These are things that we are doing to ourselves, and that’s why I think our locker room is going to be very frustrated because there’s a lot of things that we did that I don’t think necessarily Clemson forced us to do,” Coach Treanor said.

But the Orange didn’t just have turnover trouble. They also tallied their lowest number of draw controls in the last decade.

“Our biggest thing as a team, and it starts with me, is we’ve gotta figure out how to win more draw controls. That’s obviously an area that we’re struggling in, and whoever our opponent is is getting a lot more possessions,” Coach Treanor explained.

“If everyone just does their part, then it’s all going to come together. And that’s just something we’re still working towards. It’s gotten a lot better, but obviously we still have some work to do, which is executing, because I know our team can be so much better than what we’re producing now,” Orange attacker Emma Ward added.

SU has fought 3 three top-15 teams in the last week but has time to rest and regroup before its next contest. Syracuse pursues its first conference win and hosts No. 8 Stanford on Friday. Opening draw is scheduled for 5pm. Reporting from the JMA Wireless Dome, Sydney Chan, CitrusTV.
