After a top-10 victory over Maryland on Saturday, Syracuse Women’s Lacrosse returned home to face Cornell and topped the Big Red 18-10. But while the contest was played here in the JMA Wireless Dome, it may as well have been “Turnover City”. Ornge Head Coach Kayla Treanor attributed the season-high 19 turnovers to sloppy stickwork.
“We were 20 for 26 in the clear, So that’s six turnovers alone in our clear. Our goal is that we want to be 10 and under for turnovers,” Treanor said. “You look at the Boston College Northwestern game, it’s No. 1 versus No. 2, I think BC had under 10 turnovers. That’s elite. And we have to get to that level, no matter who we’re playing against. Even if you have the ball a lot, a lot of possession, we really have to limit our turnovers, and it just starts with our stickwork and just sloppy play, better decision-making, that’s certainly an area that we’re going to have to improve on.”
But it wasn’t all doom and gloom for the Orange, who had 10 different players put numbers on the board. SU junior Gracie Britton recorded her first career hat trick.
“I think we definitely have a lot to look forward to and build upon, I don’t think we’ve even grazed what we’re capable of,” Britton said.
“The thing that I really like about the offense is that it’s a shared offense. This is not a one-person show, everyone that’s on the field is a threat, and so we have a lot of balance, and I thought it was great to see,” Coach Treanor added.
The Cuse has three wins under its belt, but its gauntlet of a schedule starts now. The Orange head to Chapel Hill to play newly-ranked No. 2 North Carolina this Saturday to open up conference play. Opening draw is scheduled for 11am.
