Syracuse Ice Hockey’s 2nd period collapse leads to 2-1 defeat against RIT
Despite being 80 miles west of home, it’s the same story for Syracuse Ice Hockey (7-20, 5-8 in AHA). In its 2-1 loss to RIT (13-11-3, 6-6-1 in AHA), the Orange struck first. But a second period surge from the Tigers was too much for SU to handle. After its eighth straight loss in the year of 2025, ‘Cuse Head Coach Britni Smith said she’s still waiting for the perfect 60 minutes from her crew.
“Again, I think the biggest thing for us is just trying to eliminate the roller coaster. In a 60-minute game, you’re not going to have complete possession or domination, but being able to really recognize when they’ve started to gain that momentum and simplify our game. In terms of a complete 60, I don’t think we had it tonight, but I don’t think it’s a matter of lack of effort or ability. I think it’s just kind of recognizing those moments and situations, and again, having a young team, those are lessons we’ve got to learn.”
Despite the loss, there’s still a lot of celebration to be had for one Syracuse player. Freshman Celia Wiegand fired in her first career goal early on in this one to take the lead for the Orange. Coach Smith says she couldn’t be happier for her defender.
“Yeah, she works hard. Someone who’s been on our power play for a good portion of the season, so nice to see her get one there. Just great a poise play there. I think it actually went off RIT sticking in, but good job by her just kind of creating that space and time for herself.”
Looking ahead, Syracuse and RIT are back at it in less than 24 hours. Game 2 of the doubleheader returns to the Tennity Ice Pavilion tomorrow at 3 p.m. The season series is still on the line as the Orange lead 2-1 over the Tigers. Ben Chadwick, CitrusTV.
