Syracuse Ice Hockey loses its first game of the season to 8th-ranked St. Lawrence 4-2. This game was tight for the first 25 minutes. The Saints had struck first nearly 17 minutes into the first period. Then the Orange knocked in its first of the game with nine minutes to play in the second period.
During this entire stretch, SLU applied pressure. In the opening period, St. Lawrence outshot the Orange by more than 20 total attempts with 16 extra shots on target. That puck domination would continue into the penultimate frame.
Then when SU finally struck, the top 10 team showed why it deserved that ranking. The Saints scored three goals in the span of 1:13. That gave SLU a 4-1 lead. Syracuse grad student Bryn Saarela would make the score look a bit prettier in the 3rd period. However, the comeback died after that. St. Lawrence closed out the 4-2 victory, but if one looked at the box score they might think it was far uglier. Syracuse in the end fired nearly 60 fewer shots than St. Lawrence.
The Saints also released 30 extra attempts on target.
There were some positives for SU though. The Orange blocked 24 of the Saints’ 88 shots. The number of blocks is tied for the most the ’Cuse allowed in a single game last season. 88 shots is also over 20 more than Syracuse let up in one matchup last year.
SU goaltender Allie Kelley also played a phenomenal game. The 6th year registered 41 total saves which is more than Kelley and sophomore Bella Gould had in the first two games combined. The capital district native recorded a .911% save rate to tag on her stat line. 5th year Tatum White lit the lamp for the second time this season. SU’s top returning scorer now leads the squad in goals.
