Syracuse escapes Binghamton with a 1-0 win despite Bearcat’s late surge.

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – 25 minutes into the game, both Syracuse and Binghamton seemed to be content with a 0-0 draw. Both teams had minimal chances, couldn’t connect in the final third, and never looked dangerous with the ball. But in the 26th minute, Ava Uribe struck the crossbar in an unlikely fashion – what appeared to be an attempted cross. Although you’d expect the game to go back to its monotonous fashion, that seemed to give a spark to the previously lethargic Orange team.
SU started to press the Bearcat’s back line and force multiple turnovers. Momentum was building quickly and just 5 minutes after Ava Uribe hit the bar, the redshirt sophomore sent another cross towards the box, but this time it went straight to Ashley Rauch. Despite the unlikely angle Rauch redirected the ball brilliantly into the back of the net for her team-leading 3rd goal of the season. The rest of the half SU controlled the play and could have extended the lead, but that all changed after halftime. When the Cuse fell into trouble after the break it relied on goalkeeper Shea Vanderbosch to save them. The junior notched 3 saves, including a diving stop in the 77th minute, which was key to holding onto the victory. She has still yet to give up a goal in the second half this season. Although the bearcats scared the Orange with a late effort Syracuse (5-1-1, 0-0 Atlantic Coast) squeaked by Binghamton (1-3-2, 0-0 America East) 1-0.
The Cuse aim to continue momentum against St. Bonaventure on Sunday back at SU Soccer Stadium. The Bonnies tied Binghamton earlier this season, so Syracuse is expected to get a result. It is also Senior Day for the Orange, so be sure to come out and support the 11 seniors being honored. Sunday will also be the last opportunity for Syracuse to rack up a win before the inevitable ACC gauntlet ensues.
