A Preview for a Full Weekend of Syracuse Tennis
After a quiet weekend off, Syracuse Tennis is back in action tomorrow and Sunday against a pair of New England foes. Boston College comes into town Saturday at 11, while the Minutemen of UMass travel to Drumlins Sunday morning. It’s been a strong start to the season for SU. For the first time in 40 years the Orange swept their first three matches. Followed by a 6-1 win against a competitive Cornell team, it was smooth sailing for the ‘Cuse. Then, the first road match of the year had a rocky end. SU lost to Columbia 5-2 for their first loss of the campaign. Now, Syracuse looks to bounce back against start off ACC play with a much needed win. Here’s what to know heading into this weekend.
Doubles, Doubles, Doubles
Through 5 matches this season, Syracuse has not lost a doubles point. It hasn’t even dropped an individual match. It’s been sweep after sweep after sweep for SU. Keeping up that streak would be a change from last season when the Orange dropped the doubles point against the Eagles. Syracuse still found a way to come away with a 4-3 win.
Historic Rivalry
Syracuse and Boston College have seen each other on the tennis courts more times than anyone else. SU has faced BC a program record 40 times. The Orange trail the Eagles in the all-time series 15-24-1. Syracuse has been making up for some lost ground, riding into Saturday with a 4 match win streak against BC.
Time Machine
While Syracuse and BC face off as often as anyone, that could not be more opposite for the Orange and the Minutemen. SU and UMass have only played five times in program history. You’d have to go back all the way to 2009 for the last meeting between these two schools. That match ended in a 6-1 win for the ‘Cuse. SU is 5-0 all-time against UMass.
Overall
Syracuse Tennis has their work cut out for them this weekend. Both teams come in with records above .500. A chance for SU to improve to 6-1, or drop to 4-3. Both matches begin at 11 Saturday and Sunday, played from Drumlins Country Club.
