Syracuse Field Hockey Takes 2023 Home Opener Over Monmouth, 5-1

It’s been since October 30th back in 2010 that Lynn Farquhar coached from the sidelines of J.S Coyne Stadium. Over a decade later, the new head coach for No. 8 Syracuse Field hockey donned the orange and blue once again and her squad didn’t miss a beat, beating Monmouth 5-1

“[I’m] excited to be back on Coyne,” Farquhar said postgame. “[I’m] excited to see the young crowd here…it’s been a great day of hockey…[even if] it has been a while. It still feels like home, so it was really cool to be back and [i was] really excited to be on the sideline and on the field with his crew.”

Leading the charge for SU was its upperclassmen, and specifically grad students Pieke van de Pas and Charlotte de Vries. The two combined for four of the five goals scored and they each tacked on an assist as well. The only other score was from freshman Hattie Madden.

Notably, de Vries tied and passed Yvonne Milionis (1988-91) for 4th all-time in career goals in Syracuse field hockey history. The fifth year has 107 career points (43 G, 21 AST) and is only three back of Roos Weers (2015-18) Leonie Geyer (2010-13) for fifth all-time in career points.

“Something we say is we protect [J.S] Coyne [Stadium] at all costs, so we don’t we don’t lose on the field is a standard that we hold for ourselves.” says de Vries. “We’ve been saying this to [Coach Farquhar], reminding her of it…I think it’s just really great to really show her what this means to us and that we do not not lose on this field.”

The only bright spot for Monmouth was a one-on-one break with the Orange goalie Brooke Borzymowski in the 20th minute when Sofia Fouces got the Hawks on the scoreboard behind the ‘Cuse backline after a long pass from Jess Tucker. Despite being peppered and outshot 17-2, MU’s goalkeeper Jessie Eiselin collected eight saves on the afternoon.

Syracuse keeps the perfect season alive as they sit at 3-0. – The Orange have also now won their last 11 regular season games at J.S Coyne Stadium, going all the way back to a win over Cornell in October 2021.

This begins a stretch of four games in nine days for SU. Next, they’ll play a midweek matchup right back at Coyne for the first of two games this season against in-state foe Cornell. First push is set for 6 p.m.
