LAKE PLACID N.Y. – The Orange took a 3-0 loss to the #11 Golden Knights in their first game of the Ice Breaker Tournament.
SU Goalie Arielle DeSmet was phenomenal after giving up an early goal to Clarkson Forward Darcie Lappen. The Orange Graduate Student gave up two goals on 38 shots.
The Cuse offense was nowhere to be found as they mustered up 20 shots and didn’t seem to control the puck for most of the game. On the positive side, SU did win 34 of the 59 faceoffs.
Clarkson’s Darcie Lappen scored twice, one goal early, and an empty netter with a little under two minutes to go in the game. Anne Cherkowski also found twine for the Golden Knights late in the third period.
Orange Defender Kambel Beacom led the attack with seven shots on the night, and she also spent two minutes in the penalty box for interference. The Junior was followed by fellow Defender Mae Batherson who had five shots. Another Cuse Defender, Maya D’Arcy spent four total minutes in the bin, two for slashing, and two for boarding.
The Orange fell to 1-7 on the season with the loss to Clarkson, which was its third of the season to the Golden Knights. Syracuse went 0-1-1 against Clarkson last year.
SU is now 1-7 in their first eight games of the 2022-2023 campaign. Quite a difference after they won the CHA last season. Last year’s team ended 15-11-6 which was good enough for the championship, so the Orange have a lot of time to recover, but a lot of ground to make up.
Syracuse will be back tomorrow to take on Holy Cross in the Ice Breakers Tournament’s third place game at 2:00PM. The Crusaders dropped their opening game of the tournament to St. Lawrence 2-1 earlier in the day.
