Softball Continues Streak in Bayou

MONROE, La – Make it four straight to kickoff 2022 for Syracuse Softball. The Orange kicked off its Saturday by cruising to a 12-4 win against Morehead State and ended it with a thrilling comeback victory to remain a perfect 4-0.
1B Tessa Galipeau started the scoring with a first inning homer to right – the freshman’s first career homerun.
SU followed that up with a six run second inning highlighted by another round tripper smashed by Casares-Maher.
That offensive onslaught was all the Orange needed as the ‘Cuse ran away and hid the rest of the way. Once again, Paris Woods provided a much needed spark out of the nine spot by lacing an RBI double to right to tighten Syracuse’s grip on this one.
Lindsey Hendrix allowed six hits, four earned runs, and seven strikeouts in a nice and tidy complete game.
The real story from Saturday’s pair of games was the stirring comeback that saw the Orange claw its way back from five runs down in the seventh to win it 12-9.
SIU Edwardsville’s offense was overwhelming starter Ariana Adams as the Cougars knocked her out after recording just seven outs. She surrendered four hits and seven earned runs.
Summer Clark tried to save the day in relief only to give up a couple more in the fourth to put Edwardsville up 9-3.
Angel Jasso’s sacrifice fly brought her squad within five heading into the riveting seventh.
2B Kelly Breen continued her torrid stretch when her three-run shot in the final frame gave the team life.
Jasso followed that up with a screaming double and later scored on a Taylor Posner single that cut the Cougar lead to one.
After a costly Rebecca Clyde strikeout, SU was down to its final out in the form of the trusty veteran Woods. Coming into this AB she was sporting an 0-3 line, but with the way she’s been hitting lately, there was no doubt she was due.
Woods laced the go ahead single to score two. All of a sudden, the ‘Cuse fought back and were in the lead for the first time.
Now with all the momentum, Casares-Maher put the finishing touches on a memorable comeback with a two-run homer to score the pumped up Woods.
The job wasn’t finished until Clark came in and put SIU Edwardsville to bed, striking out two in the process.
Even though that wasn’t the best team pitching performance, the offense being able to pick up the slack Saturday night was a confidence builder throughout the roster.
The only thing standing in the way of a five game winning streak is Stephen F. Austin. SU will fly home today before it heads down south for the Tarleton Softball Invitational in Stephenville, Texas.
