Ice Hockey Begins Conference Play With Win Against Lindenwood

Syracuse, N.Y. — (CitrusTV) Syracuse Ice Hockey was down 1-0 in the 2nd period. Defenseman Maddison Stitt had scored unassisted to give Lindenwood the lead. 

Stitt’s goal was all the Lions would muster — as they would end up falling 3-1 in the first CHA game for both they and the Orange this season. 

Later in the 2nd period, Abby Moloughney scored on the power play to tie the game at 1 — on her fourth goal of the season. Jessica DiGirolamo would provide an assist, alongside Sophomore Sarah Marchand. 

In the third, it was Moloughney helping DiGirolamo out. She assisted the Grad Student Defenseman to take the lead 8:34 into the period. Lauren Bellefontaine was also credited with an assist on that goal. 

Moloughney would continue her offensive involvement. With 38 seconds remaining in the 3rd period, she put in an empty-net goal to ice the game and make it 3-1. The Senior forward finished with two goals and an assist. She now has five goals on the season. 

Between the pipes, Goaltender Arielle DeSmet came up huge again for Syracuse. The transfer from Robert Morris had 34 saves — with half of those coming in the 3rd period alone. 

Friday’s win was a well needed one for the Orange. It was only the second victory for Paul Flanagan’s team all season — with their only other one coming to Union College. This was also the first time SU played a game outside of the state of New York this season. 

With the victory, they now have a record of 2-4-2, looking to build momentum and sweep Lindenwood on the road heading into an almost 2 week hiatus. The Orange are back on the ice tomorrow at 1:30 PM against the Lions from Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
